Second ODI between WI and AUS suspended due to Covid-19; the fate of the series to be decided

Covid-19 has compelled the second ODI of the three-match series between West Indies and Australia to be postponed. The match was postponed after a West Indies support staff member was tested positive for Covid-19. Toss was done at Bridgetown for this match. Australia captain Alex Carey decided to bat after winning the toss. But minutes ahead of the start of the match, the match was called off after hearing the news of the same.

After the toss, the first suspicion arose when the players of both teams were not coming out of the dressing room. Then the commentators announced the match had been suspended.

After that, both teams immediately left their respective dressing rooms on an emergency basis and were taken back to the hotel and placed in isolation. Now the fate of the series depends on the results of the teams’ Covid-19 re-test.

Confirming the news, Cricket West Indies said in a statement, “The second ODI between West Indies and Australia has been postponed after a non-playing member of West Indies tested positive for Covid-19.The decision to suspend the match at Kensington Oval was made immediately after the toss.”

According to the statement, all two teams and match officials have been sent to the hotel in compliance with the Covid-19 rules, and the Covid-19 test will be conducted there again today. Everyone has to stay in isolation until they get the results. The match will be decided after the results come out.

But the West Indies are unlikely to have the time or opportunity to make a seemingly re-decision because the third ODI of the series is on Sunday night (GMT+6). After the series, the Australian cricket team is scheduled to depart for Bangladesh to play a five-match T20I series. However, with the Australian cricket team now in isolation, everything has become uncertain.
