Bangladesh started their T20 World Cup campaign by defeating the underpowered Netherlands. However, in the second match, Bangladesh suffered a bitter defeat against South Africa. Shakib Al Hasan’s team lost to the Proteas by 104 runs in the Super Twelve match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Thursday. Chasing the big target of 206 runs given by South Africa, Team Tigers were all out for just 101 runs.

After sharing the points in the match against Zimbabwe due to rain, the team that’s known as Chokers further strengthened their chances in the tournament by defeating Bangladesh by 104 runs. With this, South Africa won three times in the T20 World Cup against Bangladesh and a total of eight times, which means they’ve never lost to the Tigers in this edition of cricket.

Proteas’ captain Temba Bavuma went to bat after winning the toss at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday (October 27) after being defeated by Taskin Ahmed’s brilliant swing in the first over. Bavuma (2) was caught in wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan’s gloves after getting an edge on the bat as the ball was going out. The Proteas lost their first wicket by 2 runs.

After that, Protea batsmen Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw started to take on the Bangladeshi bowlers. None of the bowlers could take advantage with the ball in hand. At that time, it started to rain. At the end of 5.3 overs, South Africa was 60 for 1.

When the game started after a while, South Africa’s score stood at 90 runs for 1 wicket in 10 overs. Finally, in the 15th over, Shakib Al Hasan gave the ball to Afif Hossain. Part-time offspinner Afif broke the devastating duo by repaying the captain’s trust.

However, the T20 World Cup record pair had been built before this. Rossouw and De Kock created history by making a partnership of 163 runs off 85 balls. De Kock was caught by Soumya Sarkar at long-off playing a 38-ball 63-run innings with 7 fours and 3 sixes. Shakib did not allow Tristan Stubbs to score more than 7 runs, the Protea batter was caught on the boundary.

However, Rossouw did not miss the opportunity to pick up his second consecutive century. He reached the 3-digit magic figure off 52 balls. Earlier, Rossouw scored a 48-ball century against India in Indore. Shakib finally sent off this devastating batter in the 19th over. Rossouw went down the wicket and gave away an easy catch at cover. His innings of 109 runs from 56 balls had 7 fours and 8 sixes.

However, Bangladesh bowled very well in the last 5 overs. They took 3 wickets with 30 runs. But South Africa was right on the top of Rossouw’s century. Temba Bavuma’s team scored 205 runs after losing 5 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs.

After conceding 21 runs in the first over, Tiger skipper Shakib Al Hasan picked up 2 wickets with only 12 runs in the next two overs. Taskin took 1 wicket with 46 runs in 3 overs. Hasan Mahmud also took 1 wicket. Mustafizur Rahman did not get a wicket but gave only 25 runs in 4 overs.

Bangladesh made a good start chasing this huge goal. The team’s two opening batsmen became aggressive in Kagiso Rabada’s first over. Soumya hit two consecutive sixes in the last two balls of the over after Najmul Hossain hit the pacer for a four. Rabada gave 17 runs in the first over. It seemed like the Tigers started from where the Proteas left off.

However, the openers could not maintain the momentum for long. In the third over of the innings, Soumya returned with 15 runs from 6 balls after being caught behind off Anrich Nortje. Bangladesh also lost its way to winning after the departure of this Tiger batter. After the team lost the first wicket for 26 runs, the second wicket fell for 27 runs.

Najmul was defeated by Nortje’s speed. His stumps flew while hitting the ball with the cross bat. The two openers returned with a difference between 4 balls and 1 run. Najmul scored 9 runs off 9 balls before returning to the dugout.

Tiger captain Shakib Al Hasan was the third victim of the Protea fast bowler. The over-the-wicket ball hit Shakib’s pads, while he made room and tried to play a flick shot. Shakib did not feel the need to review the lbw decision given by umpire Rod Tucker. Bangladesh lost the third wicket for 39 runs.

Alongside the brilliance of this Protea fast bowler, Rabada, Shamsi, and Keshav Maharaj took on the rest of the Bangladeshi batters. In the end, the Tigers were all out for 101 runs in 16.3 overs. Liton Das played the best innings of 34 runs off 31 balls with 1 four and six for Bangladesh. Apart from Soumya (15), Mehidy Hasan (11), and Taskin (10), no other batsman could make a double-digit score.

After Rossouw and De Kock’s storm in batting, Anrich Nortje has created a storm of pace with the ball. The pacer scalped the highest number of 4 wickets with only 10 runs in 3.3 overs. Besides, Tabraiz Shamsi took 3 wickets, and Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada took 1 wicket each for the victorious team.
