Pakistan opener Abid Ali admitted to hospital with chest pain; diagnosed with ACS

Pakistan’s right-arm opener Abid Ali was rushed to hospital after suffering severe chest pain in the final round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy on Tuesday. The 34-year-old star batsman from Central Punjab was scheduled to play a match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the UBL Complex in Karachi. Later, when he felt chest pain during his personal 61 runs, he had to go back.

Central Punjab team manager Ashraf Ali later said that their opener Abid Ali had been taken to the hospital for observation and further action. He said that something can be said after the check-up.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) later said in a statement that Abid’s condition was stable. He is under the overall supervision of a specialist cardiologist. He is in constant touch with the medical team of PCB.

The PCB also disclosed that the cause of Abid’s chest pain was Acute Coronary Syndrome or ACS. ACS is a condition that causes a sudden decrease in blood flow to the heart. That is the main reason why patients feel chest pain.

Abid Ali is the highest run-scorer in Tests for Pakistan since his debut in 2019. The right-handed Pakistan opener has had a great year with the bat. He scored 695 runs at an average of 48.87 in nine Tests, including a double century against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2021. He scored 133 and 91 runs in the two innings of the first Test of the last Bangladesh tour. He also won the Player of the Series award for scoring 263 runs at an average of 87.66 in the two-Test series.

Abid has also maintained continuity in Pakistan’s domestic cricket, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In the meantime, he has scored two fifties. He touched the 9,000-run milestone in first-class cricket with a 61-run innings before leaving the field with chest pain.
