New Zealand and Australia met in a breathtaking match at the University of Otago Oval (Dunedin) in the second T20 match of the series on Thursday afternoon, February 25. New Zealand won by 4 runs against their opponent Australia.
After winning the toss, Australian captain Aaron Finch decided to field and sent New Zealand to bat.
The hosts lost one wicket in the first six overs and scored 45 runs. Where Guptill made 37 runs from 23 balls. Even then, the Australian bowlers did not realize after a while that this batsman would be so dangerous. Guptill played a devastating inning of 97 off 50 balls with 6 fours and 8 sixes before leaving the wicket. He scored 60 off the last 27 balls that he played. At the same time, the Kiwi batsman now holds the record for most sixes in international T20 cricket. Kane Williamson got fifty in the New Zealand innings baring Guptill. The New Zealand captain made 53 runs off 35 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes. In the end, the hosts lost 7 wickets and collected a huge score of 219 runs. However, James Neesham had a big contribution, in the end, to bring up 219 runs. The all-rounder remained unbeaten on 45 off 16 balls hitting 6 sixes. Kane Richardson was the highest wicket-taker for the Aussies (3-43, 4 overs)
Coming down to chase this huge score, the visitors fell in the face of the cannon of the Kiwi bowlers from the very beginning. As a result, they lost six wickets to score 113 runs at the end of 13 overs and lost the momentum of the match. The Aussie batting all-rounder Marcus Stoinis pulled the team from the edge of the ditch. He was accompanied by bowling all-rounder Daniel Sams. This pair scored 92 runs for the seventh wicket & brought them back in the match. Stoinis scored 78 off 37 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes. On the other hand, Daniel Sams made 45 off 15 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes. In the end, the Aussies got very close to the goal and were disappointed. The Kiwi bowlers ended Australia’s innings just 4 runs away from victory. Mitchell Santner (4-31, 4 overs) was the highest wicket-taker for the Kiwis.
