WPL 2023 League Stage Stats Review: Delhi Capitals' dominance, Sophie Devine's feat and other stats

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League has come to fag end in a grand fashion, with the playoffs remaining to be played. As many as 20 games were played in the league stage with two round-robins. Delhi Capitals, with six wins, qualify for the finals by pipping Mumbai Indians through NRR. Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz will meet in the eliminator game on March 24 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai. With two wins in eight games, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants failed to progress to the next round.

Top Performers:

Delhi Skipper Meg Lanning tops the batting chart with 310 runs in eight games at an average of 51.66; she is followed by Tahila McGrath with 295 runs in 7 innings at a staggering average of 59. Sophie Devine takes the third spot with 266 runs from eight innings, averaging 33.25. In the bowling department, Sophie Ecclestone tops the chart with 14 wickets. The second spot is shared between Amelia Kerr and Saika Ishaque, both accounting for 13 wickets in as many as eight games.

Meanwhile let us look at the stats and numbers from the leagues stage of WPL:

143 – Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Giants by 143 runs margin; this is the biggest win by a run margin in the Major Women’s T20 League, bettering the Perth Scorchers record of 104 against Melbourne Renegades in 2022.

2 – Kim Garth became the only second bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a losing cause in the Women’s T20 League, after Radha Yadav, who registered her five-wicket haul for Supernovas against Trailblazers in the final of the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge.

1 – Sophie Eccleston is the only bowler to take at least one wicket in all eight matches.

189 – RCB chased 189 runs in a game against GG, the highest successful chase by a team in WPL. Second on the list is UPW’s 181 against GG.

2 – Sophie Devine has hit eight sixes against GG in a WPL match. This is the join-second most sixes in an innings in women’s franchise leagues. Ashleigh Gardner tops the list with nine sixes against Melbourne Stars in 2017.

2 – Taniya Bhatia became the second Indian wicketkeeper to affect four stumpings in women’s T20.  First on the list is Karu Jain vs Bangladesh in 2014.

1 – Delhi Capitals became the only team to win matches inside ten overs in WPL.

1 – Sophie Devine is the only player to score 99 thrice in Women’s T20/ Franchise leagues.
