Ahead of the much-awaited clash between Delhi Capitals (DEL-W) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB-W) in the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL), Jemimah Rodrigues’ parents were filled with pride ahead of their daughter’s debut.
Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals have squared off against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first double-header on Sunday, March 5 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. As both teams have an enviable mix of Indian and overseas talent, one among them, Jemimah Rodrigues, will make her debut in the second match of the WPL.
During a discussion on Sports18, Jemimah’s parents were filled with pride and with emotion as their daughter is set to embark upon a new journey. They further recalled the moments when Jemimah’s name was called out during the auction held in December.
“I feel like every parent out there would like to be in our boots, right now. Just thankful to God for giving her this moment and you want to cherish it,” told Jemimah’s mother Lavita.
“I’m quite thrilled. I don’t know what to express. My tears might roll down my cheeks. We had gone to South Africa to see India’s matches, and we were seeing it live. During the auction day, Hotstar wasn’t there. So, I told my friends and brother-in-law down here to put it on zoom so we were tuned on our tab live,” Jemimah’s father, Ivan said.
“It was mixed feelings. If you remember, when the name was called out, for a few seconds, it was absolutely silent. When it started, I was like ‘oh, it’s happening, it’s happening’,” Jemimah’s mother added.
During the marquee event in South Africa, the flamboyant batter amassed 129 runs at an average of 32.25 in her five outings. In addition to this, Jemimah played an instrumental knock in India’s win in the high-octane clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in their campaign opener.
She scored a match-winning 53* against the Women in Green and also got 43 runs to her name against Australia in the semi-final which went in vain as India lost by five runs.
