Delhi Capitals Women recorded a crucial six-wicket win against Royal Challengers Bangalore Women in the 11th match of the Women’s Premier League 2023 (WPL) on Monday (March 13). The win further cemented Capitals’ second position in the league table while Royal Challengers struggle at the bottom of the table with no points after five games.
Meg Lanning won the toss and elected to bowl first at Navi Mumbai’s Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy. Alice Capsey and Arundhati Reddy came back in the playing XI, replacing Laura Harris and Minnu Mani. Royal Challengers made three changes to their playing XI with Megan Schutt, Preeti Bose and Disha Kasat coming in.
Smriti Mandhana’s struggle for the big knock continues as she managed to score just eight runs off 15 balls. In-form pacer Shikha Pandey dismissed Smriti in the fifth over to give Capitals a positive start. Sophie Devine added a crucial 21 off 19 but was bowled out on an excellent delivery by Shikha in the ninth over.
Ellyse Perry started with a defensive approach to avoid losing wickets and recorded another fifty. She smashed an unbeaten 67 off 52 deliveries while young wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh added 37 runs off just 16 balls to guide the Royal Challengers to a fighting total of 150/4. Shikha proved to be the best bowler for Capitals with 3/23 whereas USA pacer Tara Norris bagged one wicket for 25 runs.
Making a comeback, Megan Schutt bowled out Shafali Verma on the innings’ second delivery to give the Royal Challengers a flying start but they failed to capitalize on it. Lanning and Capsey stitched a 44-run stand for the second wicket to keep Capitals in command.
Capsey top-scored with 38 off just 24 balls before getting caught out on Preeti Bose’s delivery in the fifth over. Following that, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen kept Delhi ahead in the chase with an unbeaten 45-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Jonassen smashed 29* off just 15 balls and Kapp added an unbeaten 32 runs off equinumerous balls as Delhi Capitals chased down the target with two balls to spare. Following the win, Delhi comfortably sits at second place on the WTC points table with eight points, levelling with leaders Mumbai Indians.
