The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League 2023 came to an end in grand style, with Mumbai Indians defeating Delhi Capitals to be crowned champions.

Mumbai Indians, played the Eliminator against UP Warriorz despite winning as many as six games, courtesy of their net run-rate as it was less than that of Delhi Capitals.

Nat Sciver-Brunt was the chief architect for Mumbai, as she showcased her brilliance by scoring fifties in both Eliminator and in the final. Hayley Matthews was adjudged the Most Valuable Player for her all-round class, as she scored 271 runs and picked up ten wickets.

Top Performers:

Delhi Skipper Meg Lanning topped the batting chart with 345 runs in nine games at an average of 49.28, Nat Sciver-Brunt finished second with 332 runs in 10 innings at a staggering average of 66.40. Tahila McGrath took the third spot with 302 runs in eight innings at an average of 50.33.

In the bowling department, first spot was shared between Sophie Ecclestone and Hayley Matthews with 16 wickets each. The second spot was also shared between Issy Wong, Amelia Kerr and Saika Ishaque with 15 wickets each. Kim Garth finished third with 11 scalps.

Meanwhile let us look at the stats and numbers from WPL 2023:

143 – Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Giants by 143 runs margin – the biggest win in terms of runs in a major women’s T20 League, bettering the Perth Scorchers’ record of 104 against Melbourne Renegades in 2022.

2 – Kim Garth became only the second bowler to take a five wicket-haul in a losing cause in a women’s T20 League, after Radha Yadav, who registered her five-wicket haul for Supernovas against Trailblazers in the final of the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge.

189 – RCB chased 189 runs in a game against Giants, which is the highest successful chase by a team in WPL. Second in the list is UP’s chase of 179 against Giants.

2 – Taniya Bhatia became the second Indian wicket keeper to affect four stumpings in women’s T20.  First on the list is Karuna Jain who achieved the feat versus Bangladesh in 2014.

1 – Delhi Capitals became the only team to win matches inside ten overs in WPL.

1 – Sophie Devine is the only player to have scores of 99 thrice in Women’s T20/ Franchise leagues.
