Former West Indies fast bowler Winston Benjamin will help the Scotland national team prepare for the World Cup qualifiers. He will join the team during the pre-tournament training camp starting in April. The qualifying tournament consists of ten teams and will be held in Zimbabwe in June.

The Scotland squad containing 16 members, will head to Antigua from April 1-12. Meanwhile, their new interim head coach Doug Watson will join the team on April 8.

Benjamin said he looks forward to working with the Scotland team after being selected for the role. The 58-year-old also said he would always love working with players from various backgrounds.

“I’m very excited to work with the Scotland team during their camp here in Antigua.  As a coach, working with players from different backgrounds is important,” said Benjamin to The Cricketer.

“It’s a chance for me to teach them not only a thing or two about our conditions but also expand my knowledge base and experience. As a part of the camp, young Antiguans will also get an opportunity to play against international-grade opposition, so it’s a win-win situation in my eyes,” he added.

Winston Benjamin is a former Antiguan player who played 21 Tests and 85 ODIs for the West Indies between 1986 and 1995. After calling time on his career, Benjamin coached the Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Antigua while the 58-year-old also worked closely with Alzarri Joseph.

Scotland’s training camp will aim to prepare the players for the 2023 ODI World Cup qualifiers. The qualifying tournament will determine which all teams will participate in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in October and November in India.
