A splendid bowling display from Mayank Markande (4/15) followed by an unbeaten 74-run-knock from Rahul Tripathi helped Sunrsiers Hyderabad edge over Punjab Kings to register their first win in the Indian Premier League 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. SRH defeated PBKS by eight wickets inside 18 overs.

Invited to bat first, PBKS lost PrabhaSimran Singh on the very first ball of the innings, as he succumbed to Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s fearsome delivery. Marco Jansen then chipped in with wickets in consecutive overs to send Matthew Short and Jitesh Sharma for 1 and 4 runs, respectively.

However, Shikhar Dhawan kept the scoreboard ticking alongside Sam Curran as the duo added 41 for the fourth wicket. Markande broke the partnership by picking Sam Curran with a peach, and from thereon, the wickets kept falling at regular intervals as no batter other than Dhawan and Curran crossed the double-digit score. Dhawan kept piling runs at one end and remained unbeaten on 99 from 66 balls to help Punjab post a fighting 143. For SRH, Markande was brilliant as he picked up 4/15 in his spell of four overs.

Chasing 144, Harry Brook, who was promoted up the order, did not live up to the expectations as he was cleaned up by Arshdeep Singh for 13 runs. Mayank Agarwal had a start but was not able to convert it as SRH were put into trouble. The duo of Aiden Markram and Rahul Tripathi led the recovery in the low-scoring chase as they added an unbeaten 100-run stand to take SRH through the finish line. Tripathi aggregated unbeaten 74 from 48, with 10 fours and three sixes.
