After a hard first couple of days on the field in the fourth Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill had the responsibility to see off the last ten overs of Day 2. They looked positive in their approach but in the last over of the day, the skipper was surprised to see Gill take on the opposition by hitting the ball for a six.

Recalling that shot, Gill mentioned that even though Rohit was surprised on the other end, he backed himself and was confident that he could hit the ball for a boundary. Notably, the 23-year-old is an excellent player of spin and since the pitch in Ahmedabad is pretty flat, Gill didn’t shy to go for the big shot.

“He (Rohit Sharma) was surprised. But I told him that’s my shot. If an off-spinner is bowling on a good wicket, like the one we are playing on and the field was up to me. I thought that was my shot and I was confident that I would hit for a boundary,” Gill told the media after stumps on Day 3.

Gill, Virat Kohli bring India back on track in fourth Test

Even though Nathan Lyon dismissed him in the third session on Day 3, Shubman Gill played a brilliant knock, scoring 128 runs off 235 deliveries. After Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara got dismissed, there was a lot of pressure on the Indian batters but the partnership between Gill and Virat Kohli released a lot of it as the duo got India back on track.

Notably, former India captain Kohli (59* off 128 deliveries) finally scored a half-century in the longest format of the game as India trailed by 191 runs after Day 3. Now, the partnership between Jadeja (16* off 54 deliveries) and Kohli will be extremely important as the Rohit Sharma-led side will look forward to taking a healthy lead and putting the Aussies under pressure in the second innings of the match.
