The 19th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) featured a thrilling encounter between the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Aiden Markram-led Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday, April 14.
Losing the toss, Hyderabad came in to bat first. However, Kolkata looked to make a mark in the game early on as Andre Russell sent Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Tripathi packing in the fifth over of the match. Both batters were dismissed after scoring nine runs each.
However, Harry Brook and skipper Aiden Markram played brilliant knocks for their side. While Markram scored 50 runs in 26 balls, his batting partner Brook scored the first century of the IPL 2023. The 24-year-old English batter amassed 100* runs in 55 balls, and his knock was integral for the 2016 champions as they posted a whopping 228 runs on the board.
Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh step up in a losing cause
In the second innings, disaster struck early for Kolkata as Rahmanullah Gurbaz was sent back to the pavilion for a duck. Furthermore, Venkatesh Iyer, who came in as an impact player, also failed to leave an impression as he only managed to score 10 runs during the chase.
After Sunil Narine was dismissed on a golden duck as well, skipper Nitish Rana came through and played a captain’s knock for Kolkata. The 29-year-old played a brilliant innings, scoring 75 runs in 41 balls. Rana’s brilliance provided some much needed hope to Kolkata, who had pressure mounting on them early in the second innings.
Furthermore, the man of the moment, Rinku Singh, played a sensational knock as well. The 25-year-old amassed 58* runs in 31 deliveries. However, despite Kolkata’s brilliant effort, the side fell short as Hyderabad clinched the win by 23 runs.
After the game, Kolkata find themselves in fourth place in the IPL points table with four points from four matches. On the other hand, Sunrisers Hyderabad are on seventh place with four points in four games as well.
