Virender Sehwag is widely regarded as one of the most explosive batters in history. Even years after his retirement, the 44-year-old’s achievements are still revered. His stats speak for themselves as Sehwag represented India in 104 Test matches, where he scored 8586 runs, whereas, his ODI numbers are impressive as well. In the 251 ODI games he played for India, he scored 8273 runs.
There are few to no players in the modern game who have been able to replicate the level of Sehwag while playing a similar style of cricket. Recently, the 44-year-old came forward to give his take on the discussion as well.
Sehwag opined that the comparisons between him and the modern-day batters are stale as there are no players in the Indian batting lineup that resemble his style.
Rishabh Pant is a little bit close to what I used to bat like in Test cricket: Sehwag
The former cricketer talked about his comparisons with modern-day batters during the News18 India Chaupal. Rightly so, the 44-year-old only named Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant as the two players who have a similar style of play.
Pant and Shaw have had quite the rise in Indian cricket. While Pant has become an integral member of the national team, Shaw is still struggling to find his place in the squad. Undoubtedly, both players have a plethora of talent but are still quite far from achieving the level of success that Sehwag achieved with the Indian team.
“I don’t think there is any player in the Indian team who bats like me. The two players who came to mind who have come close to it are Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant. I think Rishabh Pant is a little bit close to what I used to bat like in Test cricket, but he is satisfied with 90-100. I used to score 200, 250, and 300 and then be content. If he took his game to that level, then I think he can entertain the fans even more,” Sehwag said.
