Former India opener Virender Sehwag opened up on Virat Kohli’s phenomenal success in international cricket. The former cricketer said that he did not think that Kohli would score these many runs or centuries. Sehwag said that no one had doubt on Kohli’s abilities but he never felt that Kohli would go on to hit more than 70 international centuries.

Notably, Kohli recently ended his century drought in Test cricket, hitting one against Australia in the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Ahmedabad. Kohli has now scored 25233 runs in 494 international games with the help of 75 hundreds and 129 half-centuries. In December 2022, he scored his 72nd ton and surpassed Ricky Ponting’s tally of of 71 international centuries.

Very few realized the importance of discipline so early: Virender Sehwag

“We all knew that Virat Kohli was very talented, But I didn’t think he would reach this level. But the way he batted against Lasith Malinga in Australia to win us that game, we knew he would be successful. I didn’t think he would have so many centuries to his name or score so many runs. He proved me wrong, and it’s unbelievable what he has achieved,” said Sehwag on Ranveer Allahabadia’s show recently.

Sehwag also said that Kohli got successful in the game due to his discipline. He reckoned a lot of youngsters made their debut in national colours during 2008 but no one could achieve the success Kohli got in the sport.

“Virat realized very early in his career that he would have to be disciplined if he wanted to play cricket for a long period of time. Very few players have realized this so early. Around the same time, many players came and went. Then Rohit Sharma came into the Test and white-ball teams and there was a competition between the two. Sometimes such a competition helps you improve your game,” Sehwag said.
