Following a blistering start from the visiting Rajasthan Royals side, Chennai Super Kings got back into the contest, thanks to the brilliance of star Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja grabbed two wickets in just one over, including the one of Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson, who was dismissed for a duck for the second successive game.
Rajasthan Royals were in the driver’s seat despite losing young Indian dasher Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply in the powerplay. Devdutt Padikkal, who looked in great touch after being promoted in the batting order, became Jadeja’s first victim of the game. Padikkal’s dismissal brought the Royals skipper to the middle.
Samson, who was in sublime touch in his side’s first two matches of the season, was cleaned up by an absolute cracker as the ball turned from middle and leg to rattle his off stump. This was his eighth duck for the Rajasthan-based franchise, the most by a Rajasthan Royals player in IPL. The wicketkeeper-batter was also dismissed for a duck in his side’s previous game against bottom dwellers Delhi Capitals.
As the surface in Chepauk was assisting the spinners, the Rajasthan team management promoted veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin up the batting order. However, Ashwin almost departed for a golden duck only for Moeen Ali to drop a relegation chance in the slips. Meanwhile, explosive opener Jos Buttler, who got off to a rollicking start in this highly anticipated contest, is the visitors’ best bet to put a daunting total on the board on a tricky surface in Chepauk.
