Before the Marsh Cup decider against South Australia at the Western Australia Cricket Association (WACA) Ground, West Australia’s premier bowler Jhye Richardson got ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. With this development, he won’t make it to Australia’s squad that will tour India for three One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

Earlier, on February 23, Cricket Australia (CA) had announced a 16-member squad for three ODIs against Rohit Sharma and his men, of which one of the names was Jhye, who has featured in 36 international games for Australia. However, now with his injury, he has been ruled out of the crucial India tour.

On Saturday, March 4, he played his comeback game for WA Premier Cricket outfit Fremantle against Wanneroo and he reported hamstring tightness following his four-over spell in the match. After reporting, Richardson was sent for scans that revealed he had worsened the injury that he got while representing Perth Scorchers in Big Bash League (BBL). However, during the game, he looked impressive with the ball as he took a 3-wicket haul by conceding just 5 runs in 4 overs.

Jhye Richardson doubtful for ODI series against India and IPL 2023 edition

After his exit from Australia’s squad for three-ODIs against Rohit Sharma and his men, selectors have picked Tasmania medium-fast pacer Nathan Ellis to vitalise the bowling unit. The 28-year-old has played eight international matches for Australia; three in ODIs and five in T20 Internationals (T20Is). Ellis was part of Australia’s ODI squad that toured Pakistan in 2022.

In December, he went under the hammer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 auction and got fetched by five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) for his base price of INR 1.5 crore. However, the injury which is troubling him for more than the last two months has endangered his chances to participate in the mega T20 league. In 2021, the speedster got a chance to don the Punjab Kings (PBKS) jersey in the cash-rich league and took three wickets in three matches.
