One of the best pacers of the current season, Shaheen Shah Afridi will captain the Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Sohail Akhtar was the captain of Lahore in the last two editions. He will be replaced by the 21-year-old Shaheen.
This is the first time the left-arm pacer is going to captain in senior-level cricket. Shaheen had previously captained the Federally Administered Tribal Areas Under-16s at the Cricket Stars Tournament of PCB in 2016. After about five years, he has been given the responsibility of leading a team.
Sameen Rana, the owner and manager of Lahore Qalandars said that the young pacer will be given the captaincy. He told the media that Shaheen was their asset and he was always by their side during the good and bad times of the team.
He added that he still remembers the 18-year-old joining the Lahore Qalandars for the first time in 2018. Since then, Shaheen has promoted himself as one of the best fast bowlers in the world. Along with himself, he has also taken the Lahore Calendars forward. So Rana thinks now is the best time to give Shaheen a chance to lead.
Afridi, on the other hand, thanked the Lahore Qalandars and said he was happy and honored to be the captain. He is hopeful that he will be able to give his best as a captain. Moreover, it is a big responsibility and he is happy that his team has entrusted him with this leadership.
In the last two years, Shaheen has become one of the best players in the world. He has already taken 184 wickets for Pakistan in 21 Tests, 28 ODIs, and 39 T20Is. He has been playing for Lahore since the 2018 edition of PSL. Shaheen has taken a record 50 wickets in 37 matches for this team.
