Ross Taylor, one of the most dynamic New Zealand stars has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 37-year-old veteran will not be seen on the international stage again at the end of the current summer season in New Zealand.
Taylor will play his last international Test match in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. They will then travel to Australia at the end of January to play three ODIs. After that, he will play three ODIs at home against the Netherlands. That series will be Taylor’s last series in international cricket.
In a farewell message, Taylor said that it is a great honor to represent his country. He also thanked his teammates, family, and friends for their support for 17 long years, and for now he will put all his energy and focus on preparing and performing for the country this summer.
Taylor has played 110 Tests for New Zealand so far and will be the highest Test-playing cricketer for the Kiwis alongside Daniel Vettori after participating in the upcoming two-match series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the 37-year-old batsman has scored 7584 runs with 19 centuries in Tests and 8581 runs with 21 centuries in ODIs. He is New Zealand’s highest run-getter in both formats.
With an ODI against the West Indies, Taylor made his international debut in March 2006. He made his Test debut against South Africa in November of the next year. The highest innings of his career are 290 runs in Perth against Australia.
Taylor was also on the wicket with Kane Williamson as New Zealand clinched the title in this year’s World Test Championship final. He said that he wants to play in the 2023 ODI World Cup. But in the end, he backed away from this decision.
Despite retiring from international cricket, Taylor will play for the Central Districts all season. He will decide later whether to continue participating in domestic cricket.
