Involving into altercation leads Lahiru Kumara and Liton Das to get fined

Bangladesh opener Liton Das and Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara have been punished for breaching level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. Lahiru has been fined 25% of his match fees and Liton 15% of his match fees. At the same time, one demerit point has been added next to the names of the two. The ICC said this in a statement yesterday.

Lahiru got into an altercation with Liton after he dismissed him in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 Super 12 match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Sunday. However, the quarrel between the two started from Lahiru’s side.

After picking up Liton’s wicket in the sixth over of the innings, Lahiru rushed towards him and said something unpleasant. Liton was also aggressively responding to Lahiru. Later, another Bangladeshi opener Mohammad Naim and the umpires evolved to handle the situation.

According to Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, Lahiru has been punished for disparaging or provoking a batter to have an aggressive reaction by using foul language, actions, or gestures. According to Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct, Liton was punished for contrary to the spirit of the game.

ICC’s match referee and former Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath has imposed the punishment. They were charged by key umpires Joel Wilson and Adrian Holdstock, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth umpire Rod Tucker. There was no need for a formal hearing as Lahiru and Liton pleaded guilty and accepted the fines.
