India vs England Match Highlights, 1st Test (Day 5): England takes a 1-0 lead as Indian batsmen collapse on the final day

At the end of the fourth day of the Chennai Test, India lost 1 wicket for 39 runs and was trailed by 381 runs to start the fifth day’s play. Chasing the world record of 420 runs, Indian batsmen could not stand up straight facing England’s bowlers. James Anderson, the highest wicket-taker in the Tests, bowled brilliantly on this spin-friendly wicket, also took three wickets on the final day. The 38-year-old pacer collapsed India’s middle-order with two wickets within four balls. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach took four wickets. The hosts were bowled out for 192 in the fiery attack of this duo.

India lost their first wicket of the day in the seventh over coming out to play. Cheteshwar Pujara lost his wicket off left-arm spinner Jack Leach being caught at slip by Ben Stokes. After that, opener Shubman Gill was moving well with captain Virat Kohli. The 21-year-old batsman picked up a half-century before Anderson came into the attack.

Whilst Anderson took the ball for the first time on the day, everything changed. In the second ball of the 27th over, Anderson floated Gill’s off stump into the air with a perfect in-swinger. New batsman Ajinkya Rahane somehow survived being lbw in the fourth ball. Anderson did not wait for the umpires in the next ball. And in a perfect in-swinger, the stump of India’s vice-captain also tumbled into the air.

India’s scoreboard went from 92 for 2 to 92 for 4. After 6 overs, the score became 110 for 5 wickets – courtesy goes to Anderson again. This time Joe Root caught Rishabh Pan in short cover. After 7 runs, off-spinner Dom Bess sent off Washington Sundar and Kohli made a 54-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin. Afterward, as Kohli was bowled in the reverse swing of Stokes scoring the maximum 72 runs by an Indian in the innings, the hosts could not survive for more than four overs. As a result, the visiting side, England won by 227 runs.

For England, the wickets were taken by James Anderson (3-17, 11 overs), Jack Leach (4-76, 26 overs), Dominic Bess (1-50, 8 overs), Ben Stokes (1-13, 4 overs), and Jofra Archer (1-23, 9.1 overs).
