Spinner Patrick Dooley’s whirlwind spell helped Hobart Hurricanes to secure a breathtaking 8-run win over Perth Scorchers in Match 8 of BBL 2022 at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston. Patrick Dooley was selected as the player of the match as he scalped the highest number of 4 wickets conceding only 16 runs in 4 overs.

Hobart Hurricanes captain Matthew Wade won the toss and elected to bat first sending Perth Scorchers to bowl. Hobart Hurricanes collected a fighting score of 172 runs after losing 8 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs.

Batting first, Hobart Hurricanes didn’t get off to a good start. They lost the opener, Ben McDermott, on the first ball of the innings. Then captain Wade took the responsibility to take the team forward. He was accompanied by another opener D’Arcy Short. For the 2nd wicket, these two made a partnership of 67 runs off 40 balls. Where Wade alone played a devastating innings of 51 runs off 29 balls. He whacked 5 fours and 2 sixes in this innings.

D’Arcy Short didn’t let the team have a bad impact after Wade’s departure. He was dismissed for 35 off 25 balls. Another batsman Shadab Khan scored 22 runs in 17 balls. But danger came after the departure of these two batters, as the team’s scoreboard went from 110/3 to 128/7. Hobart Hurricanes lost 5 wickets in just 18 runs.

Batter Tim David pulled the team from there. His unbeaten 46 off 28 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six, helped the Hobart Hurricanes to collect the big score in the end. Jhye Richardson took the maximum number of 3 wickets for Perth Scorchers. Besides, Aaron Hardie and Andrew Tye took 2 wickets each, and Jason Behrendorff took 1 wicket.

Chasing a challenging target of 173 runs, Perth Scorchers started well. They picked up 44 runs after losing one wicket in 4 overs of Power Play 1. Spinner Patrick Dooley sent the devastating Faf du Plessis back to the dressing room on the last ball of the 4th over. He scored 32 runs off 16 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes before getting out. Then another opener Adam Lyth (10) got out on the first ball of the 5th over.

Batter Nick Hobson (3) again fell victim to spinner Patrick Dooley in the last ball of the next over. Perth Scorchers lost three wickets in three consecutive overs and went on the back foot in the match. From there, wicket-keeper batsman Josh Inglis and captain Ashton Turner continued to try to take the team to victory. But the innings of Perth Scorchers stopped at 164 runs after losing 8 wickets in the scheduled 20 overs as wickets tumbled regularly.

Batter Inglis became Patrick Dooley’s third victim scoring 62 runs off 37 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes. Patrick Dooley’s 4th victim was Ashton Agar (0). Besides, Turner scored 20 and Richardson scored 13 runs. Apart from Patrick Dooley, Riley Meredith took 2 wickets, and Shadab Khan and Nathan Ellis took 1 wicket each for Hobart Hurricanes.

Hobart Hurricanes are now in the fifth position of the points table with one win and one loss in two matches. On the other hand, Perth Scorchers are now 4th in the points table after getting defeated in this match.
