In the 14th match of BBL 2022 at the Blundstone Arena in Hobart, Hobart Hurricanes took a brilliant 8-run win over Melbourne Renegades thanks to the outstanding bowling skills of the bowlers. Riley Meredith was selected as the player of the match after taking the maximum of 3 wickets with only 12 runs in 4 overs.
Hobart Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis won the toss and elected to bat first and sent Melbourne Renegades to bowl. Hobart Hurricanes were all out after scoring 122 runs in 18 overs. In response, Melbourne Renegades’ innings stopped after scoring 114 runs in 19.2 overs. As a result, Hobart Hurricanes won by 8 runs.
Hobart Hurricanes started well in batting. They picked up 47 runs after losing 1 wicket in the first 5 overs. But then they kept losing wickets regularly to the controlled bowling of the Melbourne Renegades bowlers. James Neesham (28) returned to the dressing room with the first ball of the 6th over. Then one by one Caleb Jewell (8), Shadab Khan (14), Tim David (5), and Tim Paine (10) returned to the pavilion.
In the end, they were able to score 122 runs courtesy of patient innings by Joel Paris and Nathan Ellis. Joel Parris scored 12 and Nathan Ellis returned to the fold with 21 runs. Chasing an easy target of 123 runs, Melbourne Renegades were knocked out of the match early by the bowling canon of the Hobart Hurricanes bowlers. They lost three wickets for 11 runs in 3 overs. Captain Nic Maddinson returned to the dressing room on the 2nd ball of the innings. Then Jake Fraser McGurk (1) got out in the 2nd over and Sam Harper (6) got out in the 3rd over.
Then Aaron Finch and Jonathan Wells tried to catch the lead of the team. However, Melbourne Renegades quickly lost 3 wickets and went on the back foot in the match. And with that their run speed also slowed down. On the 4th wicket, these two put on a partnership of 30 runs off 31 balls. The pair broke when Finch (13 runs from 18 balls) went back to the dressing room in the last ball of the 8th over.
Melbourne Renegades then lost two crucial wickets to score 14 more runs. Where Andre Russell scored 2 off 4 balls and Jonathan Wells scored 26 off 33 balls. After that, Will Sutherland continued to try but they could not get back into the match. He scored 40 off 29 balls before returning to the pavilion as the team’s last batsman. He had an equal number of 2 fours and sixes in this innings.
Apart from Riley Meredith, Shadab Khan also took 3 wickets for Hobart Hurricanes. Besides, Patrick Dooley and Joel Paris picked up 2 wickets each.
By losing this match, Melbourne Renegades tasted their first loss in the BBL this season. With three wins and one loss in four matches, they are now in second place in the points table. On the other hand, with the win, Hobart Hurricanes have now moved up to the 4th position in the points table.
