Former Australian legend Ricky Ponting is one of the few coaches in the popular franchise league Indian Premier League (IPL). He is the head coach of IPL team Delhi Capitals. This time, the former Aussie captain has joined the Tasmanian team Hobart Hurricanes as the ‘Head of Strategy’. Ponting played for the team for two seasons in the Big Bash.
Despite being the head coach in the IPL, his job in the Big Bash is different. The title says the former Aussie star in Hurricanes is tasked with hiring coaches, formulating various management and strategies and building a culture. Joining here, Ponting’s first assignment is to appoint a head coach. It is thought after the joining of Ponting, Justin Langer is more likely to join as a head coach.
Cricket Tasmania’s chief executive Dominic Baker, meanwhile, is overjoyed with Ponting’s appointment. He said, ”Honestly, the amount of pain we were giving Ricky to join us, that’s why he finally said ‘yes’! But really, getting him is not only a Hurricane or Tasmanian cricket win, but also an achievement of the Big Bash League. In my opinion, Ricky is undoubtedly the best strategist in the world in T20. As a proud Tasmanian, we are thrilled that he will lead the team for at least the next three seasons. “
Ponting has been commentating for Channel Seven in the Big Bash for a long time. Despite joining the hurricane, Ponting is not leaving commentary. As before, he will be seen with a microphone in the Big Bash. Only time will tell how successful Ponting will be in his new role just like his performance in the cricket field.
