The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed in a statement that England all-rounder Sam Curran has been dropped from the ongoing IPL and England squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Curran, who was playing for Chennai Super Kings, suffered back pain during the IPL 2021 match against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday.
His brother Tom Curran has been named in the England squad to replace Sam Curran. Tom Curran was already in the squad as a reserve. Now another pacer, Reece Topley, has been named as a reserve in place of Tom Curran.
Sam Curran was scanned at the end of the match shortly after feeling pain, where he suffered a back injury. The ECB has been preparing to bring Curran back to England in the next couple of days. The ECB’s medical team will keep Curran under close observation and they will then be able to affirm how long this emerging all-rounder will be out of the field.
England lost two of the best players before the announcement of the T20 World Cup squad. All-rounder Ben Stokes will not play due to mental depression and pacer Jofra Archer has already been ruled out due to injury. This time, Sam Curran’s injury undoubtedly added to their team’s frustration. Sam Curran has great batting and bowling skills. That’s why he got a place in the England team as a genuine all-rounder.
The members of the England team who are not playing in IPL 2021 reached the World Cup camp in Muscat yesterday. They will stay in Oman till 16th October. Eoin Morgan’s team will then depart to Dubai. England were the runners-up of the last edition of the event and this time, they will start the event with a match against defending champions West Indies on 23rd October.
