Cricket Highlights, 25 Nov: SL vs WI (1st Test – Day 5), IND vs NZ (1st Test – Day 1)

SL vs WI (1st Test – Day 5)

Hosts Sri Lanka has won the first Test of the series by a huge margin of 187 runs against the visiting West Indies. Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne became the Player of the Match after scoring 147 runs in the 1st innings and 83 runs in the 2nd innings.

At the end of the fourth day, the West Indies cricket team was suffering after losing 6 wickets to score only 52 runs, started batting on the fifth day, and put up great resistance. Nkrumah Bonner and Joshua Da Silva put on 100 for the seventh wicket partnership. But they could not last long on the wicket due to the whirlwind magic of the Lankan spinners.

Da Silva scored 54 off 129 balls before getting out to Lasith Embuldeniya. After that Bonner continued to fight but could not take the team forward in the end due to a lack of qualified partners. As a result, the innings of the Caribbean stopped at 160 runs. At seven boundaries, Bonner remained unbeaten with playing an innings of 68 runs off 220 balls.

Ramesh Mendis took the highest number of 5 wickets for Sri Lanka. Besides, Lasith Embuldeniya took 4 wickets and Praveen Jayawickrama took 1 wicket each. The two teams will meet in the second and final Test match of the series on November 29.

IND vs NZ (1st Test – Day 1)

India’s Test captain Ajinkya Rahane decided to bat after winning the toss at Green Park in Kanpur in the first Test of the series yesterday. They lost 4 wickets and collected 258 runs. The Men in blues were in a good position at the end of the first day with the patient batting of Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Batting first, India lost the first wicket by 21 runs. Mayank Agarwal got caught out in wicketkeeper Tom Blundell’s gloves off Kyle Jamieson for just 13 runs. After that, openers Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara handled the disaster making a stand-off 61 runs for the second wicket partnership. Shubman made 52 off 93 balls before becoming Jamieson’s second victim. However, the experienced Cheteshwar Pujara returned to the dressing room after falling victim to Tim Southee scoring just 26 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane, who took the team’s captaincy in the absence of Virat Kohli, was bowled by Jamieson for 35 and India was on the back foot then. Debutant Shreyas and experienced Jadeja took the helm of the team in that situation. Shreyas picked up his debut fifty with 94 balls. He is unbeaten on 75 off 136 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Jadeja finished the first day with an unbeaten 50 off 106 balls.
