WI vs ENG (2nd Test – Day 2)
On the second day of the Barbados Test on Thursday, Ben Stokes raised a storm over the Caribbean bowlers. As a result, visiting England declared the innings with 507 runs for 9 wickets in the 1st innings. Then at the end of the day, West Indies collected 71 runs for 1 wicket after coming down to bat in their first innings. As a result, the hosts are still 436 runs behind in the first innings. They will have to score 237 more runs to avoid follow-on.
England scored 244 runs for 3 wickets on the previous day. Captain Joe Root and Stokes added 129 runs for the fourth wicket on Thursday. Where the contribution of Root was only 34 runs. Stokes scored the lion’s share in that partnership. Stokes completed his fifty with 73 balls smashing fours and sixes one by one. From there, he played only 41 balls to reach the century. Before Stokes’ century, however, Root returned to the dressing room with a personal 153 runs.
Stokes himself could not stay longer after the century. After hitting two sixes in a row off Caribbean captain Kraigg Brathwaite’s delivery, he was caught in the long-off while attempting for a third six. Stokes scored 120 runs in 11 fours and 6 sixes before being dismissed.
Stokes has completed 5,000 runs of his Test career through this innings. He is only the fifth cricketer in the world to score 5,000 runs in Tests and take 150 wickets. With six sixes in this match, Stokes is the sixth-highest scorer in Test cricket with 89 sixes.
England declared the innings at 507 after Ben Foakes (33) and Chris Woakes (41) played their parts for the team. Left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has taken the maximum number of 3 wickets for the West Indies. Kemar Roach also took 2 wickets.
After batting, West Indies lost John Campbell’s wicket in the second over of the innings. Debutant Matthew Fisher picked up the first wicket in the second ball of his Test career. Kraigg Brathwaite and Shamarh Brooks did not let danger happen again in the day. Brathwaite is unbeaten on 28 off 79 balls and Brooks is unbeaten on 31 off 83 balls.
