ENG vs NZ (1st Test – Day 5)

The two teams conceded a draw 5 overs ahead of schedule at the Lord’s Test on Sunday (June 6). The match ended after England scored 170 for 3 while coming down to bat for the target of 275 runs given by the Kiwis. At the end of the first of the two-match series, the series is leveled.

The visitors lost night watchman Neil Wagner in the beginning after starting the game on 62 runs for 2 wickets, which was made on the previous day. The New Zealand batsmen were aiming for quick runs and played a few short innings. Tom Latham returned to the dressing room with 36 runs. But leaving him aside, Ross Taylor scored runs in ODI style.

In the end, New Zealand declared the innings with 169 runs losing 6 wickets. Adding a 103-run lead in the first innings, they gave England a target of 273 runs. The highest wicket-taker for England was Ollie Robinson (3-26, 14 overs). Still, 75 overs were rested for the day. Despite the slight risk, Williamson had no choice but to declare the innings to try their best to win.

However, the England team did not want to bring danger by trying to chase down the challenging target. They focused on saving the match. The two openers survived more than 23 overs. Only 49 runs came. The century-scorer of the previous innings, Rory Burns returned with a catch off Wagner scoring 25 off 81 balls.

Zak Crawley was then quickly picked up by Tim Southee. But Dominic Sibley did not let any addition to the danger in the 80-run partnership with captain Root. Sibley spent the remaining 25 overs with Ollie Pope even after Root’s departure with 40 runs. Opener Sibley was unbeaten on 60 off 207 balls to save the match.
