ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 – Match 29 (England vs Sri Lanka)

England has defeated Sri Lanka by 26 runs in the 29th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, thanks to a great century by Jos Buttler. They’re also the first team who secured a spot in the semifinals of the tournament.

After losing the toss, England batted first and scored 163 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Butler played a devastating inning of 101 not out off 67 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes. Besides, the captain Eoin Morgan scored 40 off 36 balls. Wanindu Hasaranga took the highest number of 3 wickets for Sri Lanka. Dushmantha Chameera took 1 wicket.

Sri Lanka came under pressure from the outset with the bowling of English bowlers to chase the challenging target of 164 runs. They lost 3 wickets to make 40 runs in 6 overs of power play. Later, Bhanuka Rajapaksa (26 off 18 balls), Dasun Shanaka (26 off 25 balls), and Wanindu Hasaranga (34 off 21 balls) tried to lead the team to victory but could not do so due to regular wicket falls.

As a result, the Lankans were bowled out for 137 in 19 overs. Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, and Chris Jordan took the most number of two wickets each for England. Liam Livingstone and Chris Woakes also took one wicket each.

After winning this match, England has retained the top spot in the points table of Group 1 with the 4th consecutive victory in the Super 12. On the other hand, Sri Lanka is in the 4th position of the points table with the 3rd defeat in a row.
