West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite is again signed by the Sydney Sixers with a motto of third consecutive title-winning in this season’s BBL. Brathwaite, who took 16 wickets in 16 games last season, played a key role in the Sixers’ title win with the ball in hand.
Brathwaite took 4 for 18 against the Brisbane Heat last season and took 1 for 25 in the qualifiers against the Perth Scorchers. These performances ensured Sixers to play in the final at home.
However, Brathwaite did not have a very good season with the bat last season. But at the start of the tournament, the 33-year-old all-rounder snatched a great victory for the Sixers by scoring 21 off 12 balls against the Melbourne Stars in the Gold Coast. So the Sixers have signed him once again as one of the keys to winning the title.
Brathwaite said that obviously winning the BBL 10 and the team’s success last year made it attractive to want to come back. He added, “As you get older you definitely want to be somewhere you can hopefully be challenging for trophies but at the Sixers, there is a deeper camaraderie and sense of family atmosphere.”
Mentioning about the team spirit, he said, “As a team, we went through a tumultuous season last year on the road without getting back to Sydney until the final, and we built a very strong bond.” He further commented that the BBL is one of the biggest T20 tournaments in the world and hopefully, that bond can help them to succeed again, this time in front of their fans at the SCG all season.
The Sixers squad currently has only two foreign players, including Carlos Brathwaite and English all-rounder Tom Curran. Curran withdrew his name from the BBL last season due to a mental breakdown in the bio-bubble. But he is expected to play for the Sixers this season.
