On the fourth day of the 2nd test, West Indies lost three wickets for 41 runs and started the fourth day’s play 154 runs ahead of the hosts. But the Caribbeans could not prolong their innings. After that, they were all out by conjugating only 76 runs. In the fifth over of the day, the falling of wickets started with the lbw of Warrican in the ball of pacer Abu Jayed. Then he took the important wicket of Kyle Mayers. The rest of the West Indies wickets have been picked up by the spinners. The left-arm spinner Taijul Islam is the most successful among them with one wicket on the third day and three more on the fourth day.
On returning from the lunch break, West Indies lost four wickets within five overs. Nayeem Islam ended the visitors’ innings by sending off Rahkeem Cornwall to the dressing room. After losing all the wickets, the Caribbeans were able to score 117 runs in their second innings and threw a challenging target of 231 runs to Bangladesh. The target is mentioned as challenging because the record of winning by chasing team is a maximum of 209 runs only in the fourth innings in Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium.
Taijul Islam (4-36, 21 overs), Nayeem Hasan (3-34, 15.5 overs), Abu Jayed (2-32, 10 overs), and Mehidy Hasan (1-15, 6 overs) took the wickets for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh made a good start while chasing down 231 runs. The goal was difficult but not impossible for the Tigers. Bangladesh picked up 59 runs in the first 12 overs without losing a wicket. Batting in ODI mood, Tamim Iqbal picked up the 28th fifty of his career just playing 44 balls. Even then it seemed that they might win the match today by breaking the record at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. But after a while, the scenario started to change.
The scoreboard went from 59 for the loss of 0 to 163 for the loss of 8. The hosts lost eight wickets scoring the next 104 runs and lost the momentum of the match. In the spin magic of the West Indies bowlers, no batsman could stand on the wicket. They also touched a record. The West Indies spinners have taken 10 wickets in an inning for the first time since 1958. Mehidy showed some hope of winning with Nayeem in the last wicket, but the innings ended with the hosts coming up short by 17 runs.
After losing this match, Bangladesh lost to West Indies (2-0) in the Test series being whitewashed as well. Despite losing the ODI series (3-0) to the hosts, the West Indies will return home after winning the Test series. For the first time since 2012, Bangladesh is immersed in the shame of being whitewashed in Tests.
