BAN vs NED (Match 17) – Highlights
Bangladesh have started their World Cup mission by winning by 9 runs against the Netherlands. Another regret of the red-green team ends with that. Bangladesh defeated West Indies in the first match of the first T20 World Cup in 2007. For 6 seasons, they did not win any match on the main stage. Now that wait is over.
Bangladesh started the World Cup mission from a bit of a backfoot with one defeat after another. The team’s confidence was at such a low point, even a win against the Netherlands was in doubt. However, after a batting disaster in their tournament opening match, Shakib’s team finally got the elusive victory with great bowling and fielding.
Although, Shakib was tested throughout the match by the Netherlands who played well in the group stage. Bas de Leede and his teammates had squeezed Bangladesh within reach with the ball. However, Scott Edwards’ team was knocked down early coming down to bat. But Colin Ackermann’s impeccable batting gave some hope, but it was not enough to win in the end.
Chasing the target of 145 runs given by Bangladesh, the Netherlands lost two wickets in the first two balls of the innings. Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede returned to the pavilion after finding an edge off Taskin Ahmed’s length ball. After some time, the Dutch went on the back foot with two consecutive runouts.
Netherlands captain Edwards and Ackermann showed the light of hope for the Dutch after losing 4 wickets for 15 runs. They both put on a partnership of 44 runs for the 5th wicket. But in the end that pair was broken by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. Edwards scored 16 off 24 balls before returning to the dugout. But Ackermann continued to pull the team by keeping one end safe.
Then Hasan Mahmud bowled Tim Pringle in the 4th ball of the 13th over. He got out scoring 1 run in 6 balls. Then, after a 10-minute stoppage due to rain, the game resumed. Logan van Beek (2) was dismissed by Hasan Mahmud before the game started. 19-year-old Shariz Ahmed was dismissed for 9 runs off 8 balls.
In between, Ackermann got into an attacking mood after scoring a half-century. However, Taskin did the main task of sending him back. Ackermann returned to the pavilion with 62 off 48 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes. As a result, the Dutch were all out after scoring 135 runs in the allotted 20 overs. Pacer Paul van Meekeren scored 24 runs off 14 balls in the last minutes.
The pacers of Bangladesh bowled brilliantly in the procession of wicket-tumbling of the Netherlands batsmen. Along with Taskin’s 4 wickets for 25 runs, Hasan Mahmud also got two wickets for 15 runs. Shakib Al Hasan and Soumya Sarkar took 1 wicket each. Besides, Mustafizur Rahman could not take any wickets despite conceding only 20 runs in 4 overs.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh batsmen started batting well after losing the toss. But after the power play, they started batting unsystematically. 43 runs came from the opening pair. Then Shakib, Liton Das, and Yasir Ali returned to the pavilion one by one while playing big shots.
After Soumya (14) was dismissed in the powerplay, his partner Najmul Hossain could not stay on the wicket for long. He was dismissed by Pringle after scoring 25 runs off 20 balls. After that, Liton, who is in the best form in batting for Bangladesh, could not expand the innings. He returned to the pavilion after scoring 9 runs off 11 balls.
Where everyone had hope for Shakib, that Shakib was also caught out while hitting Shariz’s ball for 7 runs. Yasir and Nurul Hasan also failed on the day. The match was paused for a while due to rain. It was reported before the match that there is a risk of rain in the Bangladesh match.
Then the Afif show started. Afif scored 38 runs off 27 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes, ignoring Fred Klaassen-Leede. He even got a life. Towards the end, Mosaddek Hossain played a stormy innings of 20 runs off 12 balls. Paul van Meekeren and Bas de Leede took two wickets each for the Netherlands. Besides, Logan van Beek, Tim Pringle, Shariz Ahmed, and Fred Klaassen took 1 wicket each.
