MS Dhoni has opened up about the need for the captains to contribute individually to the team apart from their captaincy. The 43-year-old claimed it would be “problematic” for the team if the captain is good with his leadership but does not perform well as a player.

When asked to share his views on the role of captain as an individual performer in a team, Dhoni reckoned that a captain is as good as their team. He also stated the performance of the player as per the role comes above the captaincy, highlighting the need to have a team full of performers.

Your performance should be right up there as a captain, then comes captaincy: MS Dhoni

“If your performance is not up to the mark and you are not performing but your captaincy is good – then it becomes a problem for the team. First and foremost, you need a performer as your captain. Your performance should be right up there, then comes captaincy,” said Dhoni while speaking to Star Sports.

Dhoni had a good time during the match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on March 23 in IPL 2025. Dhoni was also in the headlines for his lightning-quick stumping in just 0.12 seconds to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav in IPL’s ‘El Classico’.

He also had a moment of brilliance, as his recommendation for DRS proved to be correct. The wicketkeeper=batter asked captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to review an LBW call against Mitchell Santner, who was ruled not out by the on-field umpire. However, Dhoni’s judgment was spot on as the decision was overturned and Nathan Ellis got the wicket of the Kiwi all-rounder.
