Legendary South African speedster Dale Steyn has predicted that the first-ever 300-run innings in IPL history could be witnessed on April 17, 2025. His guess comes after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) displayed their batting heroics in their season opener, hammering 286/6 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.

SRH made a wonder start to their 2025 campaign with a 44-run win over the Royals. The team showed extraordinary power-hitting, courtesy of Ishan Kishan’s maiden century, Travis Head’s quickfire half-century, and cameos from Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, and Heinrich Klaasen. Their total of 286 was the second-highest in IPL history, just two runs short of the record they had set in IPL 2024. Steyn, a former SRH player and ex-bowling coach, predicted the 300-run milestone could be breached when SRH takes on Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on April 17.

“Small prediction. April 17 we’ll see the first 300 in IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to see it happen,” Steyn wrote on X.

With the kind of firepower SRH’s batting line-up possesses, the former pacer’s prediction doesn’t look far-fetched. In IPL 2024, they had already set a benchmark for aggressive batting, and their 2025 squad looks even stronger. Kishan, who replaced Rahul Tripathi at No. 3, made an immediate impact, smashing a 45-ball century on his franchise debut. His knock, along with Head and Abhishek’s batting, saw SRH score 94 runs in the first six overs, the fifth-highest powerplay total in IPL history.

Notably, when SRH faced MI at Wankhede in 2024, the match was a high-scoring game. SRH put in 277 after batting first, while MI came close but ended their innings at 246. With Mumbai’s flat batting track and short boundaries, the 300-run record could be on the cards.

On the other hand, MI lost their opening game to arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by four wickets at Chepauk, thanks to impressive bowling spells by Noor Ahmed and Khaleel Ahmed. Later Rachin Ravindra and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s batting sealed the game for the Men in Yellow.
