Jos Buttler’s brilliant knock was cut short by an awe-inspiring effort on the field by Nitish Kumar Reddy during the first T20I between India and England at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The legendary batter was playing some exquisite strokes, even as the tourists kept losing wickets from the other end. Nitish’s sensational catch stopped the England captain from taking his team to a formidable total on a challenging surface.

Buttler hit a six off the first ball of the 17th over against an in-form Varun Chakravarthy. However, the mystery spinner had the last laugh as he bowled a short ball on leg-stump that Buttler pulled towards deep square leg. Nitish charged in from the boundary line and dived forward to catch the ball inches from the ground. The third umpire checked the catch and deemed it to be clean.

Buttler had to make his way back to the pavilion after playing a magnificent knock of 68 off 44 balls. He hit eight fours and two sixes during his innings. Buttler became Chakravarthy’s third victim in the match. England were eventually bowled off the last ball of the innings after putting on a total of 132.

No other batter, apart from Buttler, looked comfortable on an uncharacteristic Eden Gardens wicket. The second-highest scorer was Harry Brook, who made 17.

Arshdeep Singh set the tone with the new ball as he took two wickets in his first couple of overs. Buttler and Brook stitched a 48-run stand off 28 balls for the third wicket. However, things went downhill from this point as the Three Lions kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Arshdeep, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel also finished with two-wicket hauls. Ravi Bishnoi was the only Indian bowler who went wicketless.
